What it’s Like Being Black (or Brown) in Ottawa
Two interesting articles from the Citizen pertaining to racism. The first one What it’s like being black (or brown) in Ottawa and the other one Why the term ‘people of colour’ is offensive to so many. Interesting reads to help us better understand each other and the paths we travel.
I never understood the term American African. I will say I’m caucasian not Canadian European. As I google these terms I find first, that caucasian not only means white but of European origin. Then when I google Canadian African google returns Black Canadians from Wikipedia and Black Canadians from The Canadian Encyclopedia. So varying opinions on that subject!
And what about this video. I’ve seen myself asking these questions. Not meaning to be offensive. I think to my defense I’d say I’ve asked the questions when the person has a distinct accent and thus a recent Canadian. I’m not meaning to be offensive, I’m interested, but perhaps is it seen as offensive.
