I stumbled upon an ApartmentTherapy blog post which features wainscoting to liven up an otherwise “boring” living room wall. It’s a good look! But my question was more is this an isolated situation or wainscoting back. So I googled some and found that indeed it is on trend. I remember finding a list of on and off design trends which had them off. It seems to me if a victorian house has them they should be kept. As for adding to a newer house – i think sometimes it can work and other times not belong.
