Bicycle Safety – Sharing the Road
I think this is a good idea. As a driver it would certainly get my attention!
Ottawa is shaking things up with cyclists giving them more lanes, more space, and with the number of accidents there have been things do need to change. As I read on the City of Ottawa site cyclists are allowed to ride 1 meter from the curb and according to the Province of Ontario site drivers are to give cyclists 1 meter of space so Warren is making good use of his noodle.
Ottawa Antique & Vintage Market
Remember that this week-end is the Ottawa Antique & Vintage Market. 30000 square feet of treasures. Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 4 at the Fieldhouse at Carleton University, Bronson and Sunnyside Avenue. It’s all about being green really: this is the Reuse R.
Coach Houses to make their debut in Ottawa
City of Ottawa staff have presented rules for coach houses, Council will vote on this later this month. What is being proposed is that the coach house be a one storey structure no greater than 40 per cent the size of the main house and 40 per cent the size of the yard, or 80 square metres (approx 860 square feet).
The most interesting aspect is the setback which is to try to protect the neighbours’ privacy: interesting the word try. Well let’s see later this month what council approves or changes.
Proposed sites for new Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus
The NCC has revealed a list of 12 possible sites for the new Civic hospital campus. Molly & I like the Tunney’s Pasture site – close to current site and close to public transport. My least favourite is taking away land from the Central Experimental Farm. As a Heritage keeper with Heritage Ottawa I certainly can’t support taking away land from that historical site.
According to your level of interest, keenness, and time you can also take the survey.
Chateau Laurier Extension
Blog 2
If I may continue on the subject of the Chateau Laurier extension – this is an interesting article. They don’t mind the modern addition to an existing building but don’t find this proposal quite unique enough. Alas true! Seems Algonquin college designed something quite similar.
Now I do believe the glass addition to the Bank of Canada is quite successful as is the glass addition to the Museum of Nature. The Muchmore school in the Glebe also has a nice addition.
Chateau Laurier – Proposed expansion
When earlier this year they started expansion work on the National Art Centre, a building which I’ve always loved I was concerned, I remain that! But now proposed changes to the Chateau Laurier – I’m really concerned. At first I was seeing parts of the new construction on the front of the building, which to me is perfect, but it is just in the back on the park side. From Wellington Street there might be a bit of glass visible at the north end.
I generally love modern extensions to classic buildings, in this case I am worried, but it could work. It is generally not a recommended Heritage route to make extensions such as the on the Lord Elgin which come very very close to the original. Contrast and volume are key! And in this proposal we have contract and the roof line does not exceed the original structures.

Current opinion is not favourable and I can understand that!
Another day we’ll talk about what’s going on accross the street at the former train station.
Oxford Street Little Library
Love these little libraries that spring up on front lawns. The one in Hintonburg has however been getting some bad publicity, it may have been potentially saved by Kitchissippi Counsillor Jeff Lieper. If you do a drive by you might find that beyond the libraries there is more: the garden is overgrown and out of control. And so is the problem the libraries or the garden and its content?
Lowertown Truck Tunnel
Something needs to be done it’s true. Is this the answer? With all the proposed traffic underground it makes me thing they’ll have to have intersections and lights underground for when the light rail comes barreling through. The cost of this solution is quite something. I hope they’ll be wary of not creating another sinkhole. Thought they say the other one was not created by the boring.
