150 Facts About Canada… in 150 seconds
I’ve decided to focus on our sesquicentennial (did I tell you I love that word) for the next couple of days. It is something to celebrate!
We are lucky to live in one of the best countries in the world. And so here we have 150 Facts that attest to that statement! That’s a goodly number of facts. And you’ll only need 150 seconds to review them. Enjoy!
Architect – Thomas Fuller
With the sesquicentennial celebrations in full swing it’s an appropriate time to feature Thomas Fuller. Fuller was born in England in 1823. In 1857 he immigrated to Canada. Two years later his firm, Fuller and Jones was selected by the Governor General Sir Edmund Walker Head to design a Parliament House: the Centre Block. It was to be built in gothic revival, the neo classical style was considered but at the time was rejected as it was too closely associated with American republicanism.
In 1867 he was selected to build the New York State Capital in Albany. Cost overruns had him removed and he returned to Canada, he was hired as Chief Dominion Architect. He held that position from 1881 to 1896. In that capacity he was involved in the design of every Federal Building.
A Guide to Canada Day in The Capital
Its going to be a big party! 500,000 big! To get things ready roads have started to close – read here but good luck keeping up as it will likely change on a moment by moment basis.
There will be much to do outdoors and indoors this week-end. To make sure you don’t miss a thing here are a couple of different links for activities starting on June 30 one from the Ottawa Citizen and one from Ottawa Tourism. Enjoy!
Footbridge – Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street
After 110 years of planning the footbridge between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street is being built. These pedestrian cycle bridges are great!
Before the construction of the Somerset Street bridge to Overbrook getting to the bicycle path along the Rivierain Park meant first getting to the Cummings Bridge then going down. Not being a regular cyclist I was never a fan of that now all I do is go down to Somerset and use the footbridge. Much nicer! So congratulations to the Glebe and Old Ottawa East for this great addition to their neighbourhoods.
Aerial Drone Footage of Ottawa`s Iconic Landmarks
These provide a unique view of known Ottawa landmarks. A great contribution to the Canadian Sesquicentennial Celebrations and a delightful use of a drone! Parliament hill, the Supreme Court, the National War Memorial, and the Canadian War Museum. Helps balance out my recent perception of drones from Netflix. I`d forgotten the great things they can do watching the made up dramas of situations they so often get embroiled in with restricted air space or privacy – so nice to see this.
Canada Day 150
Celebrations in the Capital
I’m starting to think of my plans for Canada Day! Our sesquicentennial celebration (love that word). I typically like to make my way to the Hill for the speeches in the morning. Oh and this year The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will be in attendance. She always has great hats – that will make her stand out so she’ll be easy to find. After that I try to watch the changing of the guard but without a periscope that can be challenging.
I’ve not attended either the afternoon or the evening concerts of late rather I like to enjoy the street entertainment – oh and the chip wagons. Here is a list of the big names performing!.
I do make my way back to the area to watch the fireworks; and this year the fireworks should be extraordinary. Without having spent the evening on the Hill I don’t think it will be possible to get back there which is fine I don’t think I need to be in a sea of 500,000 people. Major’s Hill Park is a great viewing point but this year that may be challenging too. Humm… I better start planning. Oh I know, I’ll go through my past client list and see who bought a condo where when we stepped out on the balcony someone said “You’ll be able to see the fireworks from here!”
From a security perspective, I’ve read that the Hill will not be a fortress but it will be safe. Be prepared to have your bag checked though!
What $750,000 Will Get You Across Canada
You have $750,000! That`s a good amount of money. But it`s perhaps a better amount of money according to where you live in the country. If you`re in Vancouver it will get you a 2 bedroom condo, if you`re in Thunder Bay you`ll get a luxury home with 2.6 acres. And in Ottawa…
