COVID-19 Update

• To date, more than 49,000 doses of vaccines have been administered in Ottawa.
• Starting Friday, March 5, pop-up clinics will open in select communities experiencing higher rates of COVID-19 transmission. Locations, hours of operation, and booking information will be available on Monday, March 1. Only residents born in or before 1941 or who are receiving chronic home care services, who live in the identified communities will be able to book an appointment. Eligible residents will be able to book COVID-19 appointments next week. Residents should not call Ottawa Public Health or 311, as no appointments can be booked until then.

I attended the Mayor’s virtual Breakfast on Thursday morning. They had great speakers! The host was Adrian Harewood of CBC News Ottawa, the interviewees were Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey of the Parkdale United Church, Solange Tuyisshime of Elevate International, and Jock Climie of Emond Harnden LLP.

The following is an excerpt from a CBC post yesterday.

Real estate developer Brigil is purchasing the site of Ottawa’s former downtown Greyhound bus terminal and is planning a major redevelopment of the property, the company announced Monday.

Plans are already underway to build a multi-use space featuring luxury condos, office space, hotel buildings, restaurants and retail stores, Brigil said.

Brigil said its offer to purchase was accepted in December with conditions, and that the final sale will close March 1.

“I am delighted that the Brigil team is the one that gets to conceptualize this new project, committed as we are to building comprehensive living environments where residents can thrive, said Brigil president and founder Gilles Desjardins in the press release.

The company also said it has invited architectural firms from Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal to participate in a design competition. It intends to submit project plans to the City of Ottawa in the spring and to begin construction in 2023.

Current zoning rules would allow the company to build up to 27 storeys high, the release said. The complete article can read here.

City taking concrete action against racism

In the past year, we have not only been challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, but we have also seen the issues of racism and the disproportionate impacts of systemic inequity come into sharp focus, both at home and abroad.

The existence and complexity of systemic discrimination must be acknowledged by our institutions as well as by us as individuals if we are going to effectively address these issues head on. It starts with stating uncomfortable truths. Indigenous Peoples, Black, Asian and other racialized populations in Ottawa have disproportionately been, and continue to be, the victims of violence, racist graffiti, racial slurs, excluded from activities and employment opportunities and discriminated against in the workplace.

This can only end with sustained, concrete action. Municipalities have a role to play and that is why I supported the creation of the Anti-Racism Secretariat. Under the leadership of Councillor Rawlson King, who has become the first Council Liaison for Anti-Racism and Ethnocultural Relations Initiatives, we are listening and acknowledging issues.

I am also pleased that Ms. Yusra Osman was hired as the City’s first Anti-Racism Specialist to advance this work from within and across departments. I have every confidence that Ms. Osman will advance the important work needed, including work that has been underway through the Somali Community Table since 2016.

The secretariat will help ensure that an anti-racist lens is applied to city policies, with an emphasis on six priority areas: employment equity, equity in governance, housing, economic development, health outcomes and youth development.

Since the establishment of the Secretariat in 2020, some of the progress made by the City includes:

• Initiating the creation of an Anti-Racism Advisory Table;
• Launching a public awareness social media campaign to condemn anti-Asian racism;
• Launching the gender and race equity data baseline study together with the Women and Gender Equity Specialist; and
• Creating the “Coping with Racial Stress” pilot project for youth with the Neighbourhood Ambassador Program.

As the Mayor of Ottawa, I remain committed to making our city a better place to live for all residents. Change is necessary in all our public service institutions. If we remain steadfast in our resolve, we can create a more inclusive and responsive community that is welcoming for all residents.
