I should think I will start a new blog post feature. One that encourages local businesses! Today we look at Hard Shampoo. In the managing partner’s own words:

Lalonde family: Martin & Adele married 2002
Martin – engineer and Applications and Technical Support Manager at Wieland Electric
Adele – high school physics and chemistry teacher, left teaching in 2010 to become and entrepreneur, owned a tutoring company employing over 250 tutors. Sold the business in 2017 to take care of the family full time.

Chloé – 16 competitive gymnast, works part-time at Sula Wok, volunteers at church (Canadian Martyrs parish) as a catechist, gr 10 Franco-Cité in défi (enrichment) programme
Louis – 14 comp swimming, at provincial level competition in Markham this weekend, gr 9 at Franco in défi (enriched) program
Marie – 10 comp gymnast, active in Jeannettes (francophone girl guides), gr 5 at Ste-Anne
Henri – 5 jardin (SK) at Ste-Anne, loves dinosaurs and alpine skiing with his siblings.

Moved to Old Ottawa East in 2020 from Mississauga.

In our mission to encourage our kids to be change-makers in the world, we’ve started a family enterprise!

Shampoo and conditioner bars are a great way to reduce your consumption of single-use plastic. We started using them as a family last summer, and we love them! The problem was, we’re a big box family and we like shopping big deals! Shampoo bars are considered luxe items, despite the fact that soap has been around since 2800BC. With a desire to protect the environment, teach our kids about entrepreneurship, and seeing the need for high quality, affordable shampoo and conditioner bars, Hard Shampoo was born.

We all have our roles:
Adele – Managing Partner
Martin – Silent partner 😉, affectionately known as the Bar Czar
Chloé – Creative Director
Louis – Fulfillment Manager
Marie – helper, social media demos and voiceovers
Henri – helper and Instagram model
We also have regular family meetings to discuss product development, growth plans, strategic marketing and process streamlining.

Canadian Tulip Festival

The Canadian Tulip Festival starts today with the opening ceremonies at 11 am. The delay in getting warmer weather has kept them from blossoming early – so looks like the timing is good. The festival runs till May 23. I drove by Dow’s lake yesterday and saw many kiosks ready to host the crowds. Do go out there and enjoy the beautiful weather. Alas, the forecast calls for rain from Sunday to Tuesday.

Lansdowne 2.0

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) has a new proposal – Lansdowne 2.0. Barry Hobin explains the plan for a new North Side stands, the relocation of the Civic Centre arena or event centre, as well as 3 towers: 2 rentals and 1 condo housing 1,200 units.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson likes the proposal. Anthony Carricato is not happy with certain aspects of the proposal or the seeming rush to approve the project.

Personally, I like the idea of an event centre larger than the National Arts Centre (NAC) and smaller than the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC). As for the rest of the plan I’m not well enough versed to comment on it’s feasibility. I could add that when the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park was initially constructed my first reaction looking at it from Bank Street was not very positive, but, making my way in, and wandering around streets such as Marché Way I found myself quite liking the feel of the area – to my surprise.

Rolling Thunder Bike Ride

The Rolling Thunder rolls into town later today. You might want to be aware of their planned activity and route this weekend. Seems they arrive this afternoon sometime. Other than at the War Memorial on Elgin the route looks to be Sandy Hill and a part of Vanier. Police presence will likely be strong, but you may not want to be disrupting their route. Ottawa Road Trips – Sandy Hill

I’ve stumbled upon an interesting website: OttawaRoadTrips. In this particular post I’m featuring their recent post: What to see (and eat!) In Ottawa’s Sandy Hill neighbourhood. As far as road trips go it’s not a distant one, but it is a worthy one. In the fall I always say no need to travel far afield to see great leaves, Sandy Hill with its mature trees provides a rainbow of colours.

As a former resident of Sandy Hill, I must agree with their selection. I’d perhaps add one more, a favourite restaurant: Working Title Kitchen + Cafe. Either sit inside or enjoy the great patio.
