Located on the east side of the Rideau River to the southeast of downtown, Mooney’s Bay is one of the most scenic neighbourhoods in Ottawa and is a great place to live thanks to its bounty of recreational options. Here are some reasons to consider the neighbourhood of Mooney’s Bay if you and your family are contemplating a move:
The Beach
Mooney’s Bay Beach is within walking distance of the neighbourhood. Need we say more? Whether you want to lounge on the beach with a favourite paperback, dip in the water with the kids, or participate in great activities that are organized at the beach like the annual HOPE Volleyball Tournament, Mooney’s Bay is the place to be in the summer. The Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival also takes place here annually in June. With picnic tables, bike paths, and a gorgeous view of the Rideau River, even with a beautiful house it is hard to resist spending time here in the summer.
Parks
Hog’s Back Falls were created as a result of the damming of the Rideau River in the nineteenth century. The falls are beautifully scenic and located just north of Mooney’s Bay. Also located very close by is Vincent Massey Park, a sprawling mix of quiet walking paths, rolling hills, and popular picnic areas. With views of the Rideau River, these outdoor options are a great point of attraction for the neighbourhood.
Terry Fox Athletic Facility
This multi-use facility is a great feature in the neighbourhood. It is primarily used for track-and-field training, especially for schoolchildren, and also features soccer fields. Sports played here include soccer, rugby, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee. In the winter time, the track is transformed into a cross-country skiing training facility and is open to all for a very small fee. This is a state-of-the-art outdoor facility and a huge benefit to have in the neighbourhood.
Shopping
As you can see above, the main advantage of the neighbourhood of Mooney’s Bay is its outdoor attractions and recreational options. However, it is well-located for shopping options as well. In addition to the necessities of grocery stores and pharmacies, malls and shopping complexes like South Keys and Merivale Road are relatively quick drives.
Easy Access
As a result of being located just south of downtown, Mooney’s Bay has a lot of advantages. A quick drive north up Colonel By allows easy access to Landsdowne Park, the Glebe, and all of the attractions of downtown Ottawa. At the same time, a quick drive to the south leads easily to the airport, without any downside. Nearby Hunt Club road offers direct access to both the east and west sides of the city and continuing southward on Riverside or Prince of Wales makes it easy to connect to the southward highways and the 401. But with a picture-perfect house in such a scenic community with so many amenities, who would want to leave?
