Urban Echo-Village Planned for Ottawa

Soon, well 15 years soon, Ottawa will have a very green development. The Windmill Development Group has submitted a plan to the City of Ottawa for a 40 acre development. This development will be on the Domptar lands near Chaudiere Falls and Albert Islands. It will be a development where walking cycling will be preferable.

Blinds with Incorporated Solar Power

This seems like a good idea. Blinds that draw in solar power. They even adjust during the day to maximize their draw. They can be opened by an app or perhaps by voice with Google “Hey Google Open the Blinds!” If you can do from a distance could be really fun if you leave your partner at home and want to mess with him/her.

Nespresso & K Cup Recycling

I read that K cups are going down in popularity potentially because of their effect on the environment. Recently stopping at Home Outfitters in Kanata I found they have a Nespresso cup recycling set-up. When I asked if there was such a set-up for k-cups what I was told is “But they are recyclable!” What you do is peel the tin foil off the top empty the coffee ground into your composter and then the empty cup can be put in your blue bin. Love that idea!

Earth Hour

Zera Food Recycler

There’s a new way to dispose of waste around the corner. A less labour intensive way to compost. Whirlpool’s Zera Food Recycler! A great way to compost in your kitchen by adding food waste which within a week you can transform into fertilizer for your garden.

The Zera will launch on crowdfunding. Not so much to raise money as to gain support. It will retail at $1,199 but seems to be available through Indiegogo at $699 (USD I suspect).

Oh and there’s an app for that!

When yesterday I first read that Tesla/Solar City was introducing a new type of integrated solar panel it seemed important but sometimes it’s hard to distinguish the new big thing vs the latest gimmick. But by the end of the day it was making news on so many reputable news sites. Let’s see where this goes…

Solar energy is great! But making use of it is another thing. The possibilities have been there but not attractive, complicated or expensive. As more and more options such as these come onto the market competition will rise, prices will drop, and availability will increase.

Bicycle Safety – Sharing the Road

I think this is a good idea. As a driver it would certainly get my attention!

Ottawa is shaking things up with cyclists giving them more lanes, more space, and with the number of accidents there have been things do need to change. As I read on the City of Ottawa site cyclists are allowed to ride 1 meter from the curb and according to the Province of Ontario site drivers are to give cyclists 1 meter of space so Warren is making good use of his noodle.

The 4th R: Repair

The fourth R could be repair. I like that!

Sweden is giving a tax break for repairs of small objects. What a great idea! The Scandinavian countries are so forward thinking.

I do like to repair things (or have them repaired according to complexity) but we had been headed into a society where things are replaced rather than repaired. Great news if that trend is changing.
