IODE House & Garden Tour

The 57th annual IODE House and Garden tour is this Saturday May 12 from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can read more about it in last Saturday’s Citizen.

Tickets are $35 and are available at several retailers indicated on the Laurentian Chapter of the IODE.

Jane’s Walk 2018

This year Jane’s Walk featuring over 50 walks will be May 5-6. This free festival of neighbourhood walks is a great way to discover facts about your area, another area, and perhaps make new friends.

Heritage Ottawa is a supporter of Jane’s Walk.

Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT)

The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) is being replaced with the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT).

The OMB would hear the arguments and make a decision. The LPAT will simply determine if yes or no the proposal meets the city’s official planning rules. If not it will be sent back to the municipal councils.

The OMB could/would overturn decisions by the city and seemed too often to side with the developers and thus allowed for the construction of larger than desired buildings built with a total disregard of zoning restrictions.

So there’s progress! But there’s also consideration for the neighbourhood and of course respect of the heritage properties. Let’s see where this takes us!

All Saints Redevelopment in Sandy Hill

The city has approved the redevelopment of All Saints in Sandy Hill. The construction of the multi-use building will mean the demolition of Bates Hall – which it seems does not hold heritage status. Not that that would help it a lot. The nine-storey building will have commercial spaces, as well as retail, office restaurant and residential. Seems the actual details of the plan are evolving.

Remember to set your clocks forward at 2am Sunday or before you go to bed Saturday night.

Did I ever tell you the time I only had a phone and a computer and it took me several days to realize that the time had changed. Glad to currently have a couple of clocks on the walls now to remind me.

Snow plow – Snow Boot

Come this time of the year I think most homeowners would really love the city to have a few of these. They may work great in Alaska, and I feel like I’m watching it being used in a more rural setting: how would they work in a more urban setting with driveways more at proximity of one another? Seems it works with up to 10 centimetres, is more expensive to run, and takes more time. Sill we must encourage snow plow designers to keep working, ultimately this could be a game changer!
