The ghost bike which has appeared on Marion Dewar Plaza at Ottawa City Hall steps from where the fatal accident happened last week shall serve as reminder to City Hall officials that something needs to be done to ensure that everyone is safe. Yesterday, approximately 200 cyclists rode in silence past city hall.

In October, my Facebook feed lit up with friends concerned about another friend who had not been heard of in a few weeks. Molly & I volunteered to visit him at his apartment. When we arrived, we were greeted by the superintendant and the police, who informed us he had died. They were looking for contact information. Unfortunately, he had been dead for sometime. That evening I had a chat with a friend Laura and we thought as a community we had failed Scott. It was proposed that we’d encourage seniors who live alone to buddy up and check in on each other for others something more structured would be needed. Fast forward a few months and in partnership with OSPN, The Good Companions, who already had the Telephone Assurance Program (TAP) creates the LGBT Wellbeing Check-in Program. This new program is city wide with no restriction on area. Contact The Good Companions for details.

Six months after one of the worst natural dissasters to strike the city, life in the affected areas is moving forward.  Claims are being adressed and the rebuilding will proceed.  Read more here in the Globe and Mail.
