In 1809 Elizabethtown was a hamlet in the township of Elizabethtown in need of a new name. In 1812 it took the name of Brockville to honour General Isaac Brock who had recently won the Battle of Detroit. That same year before the name could become official he was mortally wounded in battle.

Total let us travel to New York City 1931. On January 13, 1931 the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects held a ball at the Hotel Astor. 20 Architects were dresses as their buildings. Must have been quite the spectacle! Here a group of seven representing what has become iconic buildings of the skyline most of New York City.  I seem to recall that architects of a later generation did a photo spread wearing their buidings.

Werner Ernst Noffke

Werner Ernst Noffke was a Canadian Architect of German Descent. In 1884 his parents relocated the family to Canada including the 5 year old Noffke. He apprenticed with Adam Harvey and studied at the Fine Arts Association of Ottawa. Later he partnered with George W. Northwood. Mr Northwood worked principally in the West while Noffke worked principally in Ottawa. Approx 200 buildings were constructed, at least 60 remain. Ottawa Heritage produced a booklet called Werner Ernst Noffke: Ottawa’s Architect – it is with that book in hand that I went exploring.

Noffke is known mostly for his grand houses, these are eclectic in style with a Mediterranean influence, or various other architectural styles popular at the beginning of the 20th century.

Noffke also designed 3 larger quite celebrated building. The post office at the corner of Elgin and Sparks, the Medical Arts building on Metcalfe, and the Ogilvie store at the corner of Rideau and Nicholas.

Architecture – Guédelon Castle

This project is in Treigny France. The object is to build in the 21st century a castle in the same manner as it would have in the 13th century, using only period construction techniques, tools, materials. Construction started in 1997 and will be completed in 2023. The goals can be categorized as follows: tourism, education, science and technology, human, and social.

LRT / O-Train Confederation Line Stations – Design and Public Art

I do love the look of these stations. Cant wait to see more of the public art. Makes me feel like my hometown is growing up.

From a poetic standpoint it would have been fun if the Rideau Station could have been located in the former Train Station. I imagine that was logistically not possible. I do hope they thought about it. Or maybe it’s just me!

Although the city makes mention of public art in this article. Stay tuned for another more detailed post on the art.
