I lived in Seoul, Korea from 2008 to 2012. At first in the diplomatic area of the military base and then in Seoul per se. The diplomatic area was an enclave of large identical white semi-detached homes on the base. It was surreal! Not always in a good way. Subsequently I lived in Bogwang-Dong. Korea is a very modern city. And so today I take you down memory lane. Some of these buildings were there in my day some not. A lot has changed in 5 years.

I must thank my friend René Rivard for his suggestion to feature contemporary architecture of China in this post. Last year he visited China and was most taken with its architecture. Fulford Place was built between 1899 and 1900 for Senator George T. Fulford by American architect Albert W. Fuller. Fuller has an impressive list of accomplishments – sounds like the subject of a future post. Fulford Place is a 20,000 square feet Edwardian style mansion and is Brockville’s grandest house. In 1987 the house was donated to the Ontario Heritage Foundation.

Burning wood to make it fireproof! Not something that’s been very popular in the west but it has been done for a long time in the east. Seemingly it als oneutralizes the cellulose in the wood which makes the wood unattractive to termites, fungus, and bacteria. Fire the new old way to treat wood! Read more here!
