Architect – Gert Wingardh – Wingårdh Arkitektkontor

Gert Wingardh was born April 26, 1951 in Skovde, Vastergotland, Sweden. He studied economics, art history, and finally architecture. He is one of Sweden’s most esteemed artchitects. He states that visiting the Pantheon in Rome made him want to become architect. Gert Wingardh’s style is described as Maximalist or Modern Baroque. As maximalist myself in my decorating style I can relate to that. He incorporates an element of surprise within the designs of his buildings. I love the shapes and the colours. He most admires Frank Llowd Wright, Hand Scharoun, Carlo Scarpa, Frank Gehry, and Peter Zumthor.

Chateau Laurier Expansion
Version 4

So there was version 1, then version 2, version 3 and now version 4. Molly likes version 4. Must listen to that as she has a good eye for conversations established between buldings and art. David Jeans of Heritage Ottawa says some concerns previously raised have been addressed but also states version 4 looks seems like a variation of versions 1, 2, and 3. Well then as variations go I’m going with version 3, for now, as I like the contrast of glass and limestone. Sort of like the Bank of Canada expansion.

Other posts on the subject were a review of version 2, my post on the architects involved and another post on additions to buildings. I’m totally with the Ontario Heritage Act which states that an extension should be of its time. Of its time but complementing, contrasting, dialoguing with the original structure. With that philosiphy in mind I dont think we should be echoing an expansion such as on the Lord Elgin. Though successufuly executed I dont think we should do that. That approach does not add anything of interest, just expands with more room.

Architecture – Royal Family Residences

I admit it, watching the Royal Wedding subsequently had me wondering: Where will the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex live? One thing led to the other and I started to wonder where do the others live? We know where the Queen lives, that’s been the subject of a previous post but what of the others.

Anmer Hall

This late-Georgian style house in Norfolf, is in the style of a Georgian country house. It was a wedding gift to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Catherine) from the Queen. It was built in the 18th century and forms part of the Sandringham estate.

Architect – Kengo Kuma

Kengo Kuma is a Japanesse architect. He was born in 1954 in Yokohama. He is a professor at the University of Tokyo. He also studied in New York City at Columbia University. His firm Kuma & Associates employs over 150 architects in Tokyo and Paris. In 2009 he was made Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. His goal is to create 21st century reinterpretations of Japanese traditions. His buildings have such intricate, detailed, perforated facades.

Architect – Charles Gwathmey

Charles Gwathmey was born in 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina, he died in 2009. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Yale School of Architecture. He was one of the New York Five, as was Michael Graves you’ll remember. Amusing fact he designed a beach house for his parents in 1965 before being licenced. The house design was part of a question during his licensing exam! Gwathmey was a a modernist to the end. The New York Times featured a great article on him when he died.

Architect – Michael Graves

Michael Graves was an american architect. Graves was born in 1934 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned his bachelors degree at the University of Cincinnati and his masters at Harvard University. He taught at Princeton for approximately 40 years. He was part of the New York Five, a group of architects whose photographed work was the subject of CASE (Committee of Architects for the Study of Environment). He was also a member of the Memphis Group, a group focused on work typicaly featuring asymetrical colourful design elements. In the 1960s and 1970s Graves worked in the modern style. However, he is best known for his postmodern style. Postmodern being the style that came about in reaction to the simplicity of the modern style. His most iconic buildings are the Portland Building in Oregon, the Humana Building in Kentucky and the expansion of the Denver Public Library in Colorado. His style also falls into the New Urbanism and New Classical Architecture. New Urbanism being the movement to create environmentaly friendly spaces. New Classical Architecture which is the intregration of classical elements into contemporary design. He was a major influence in the three styles.

This is an important design because although of the modernist style it is quite elaborate it is hinting at things to come.

Portland Building, 1982
This building was in great contrast to what was being built at the time. Important design elements are the contrasting colours and the use of reimagined classical elements.

Riverbend Music Centre, 1984
This outdoor amphitheatre was built to enable the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to perform outdoors during the summer months.

Humana Building, 1985
Known as the “Milk Carton”, each side of this building is slightly different. It is capped by a pyramidal shape.

Disney HQ features large figures of dwarves that act as caryatids suporting the pediment.
