Last year when I finished the Pritzker prize laureates I thought where will I find new architects to explore. Well, thanks to Architectural Digest with their list of best this or most that I have another source. In this instance Architectural Digest has put together a list of the 11 most anticipated buildings of 2020. Some of these architects we know, others we will explore in subsequent posts. I chose Zaha Hadid Architects as the feature building. What a shame that at 65 she left us too soon. Imagine what other unique contributions she could have made.

Rafael Viñoly is a Uruguayan architect. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires and the School of Architecture and Urbanism. In 1983 he founded Rafael Viñoly Architects. Born in Montevideo in 1944 he relocated to the United States in 1978. I’ve featured his most recent work and one from 19999: the Jongno Tower, because when I lived in Seoul i was fascinated by that building. Today his firm has offices in New York, Palo Alto, London, Manchester, Abu Dhabi, and Buenos Aires. When asked what makes a building an architectural success Viñoly answered: The best architecture redefines how things are going to be, rather than repeating what has been accepted, or what is already part of the norm. You may remember that Vinoly was previously featured in 13 buidings that redefined architecture.

Gensler is an international design and architecture firm based in San Francisco and founded by Art Gensler, Drue Gensler, and James Follett in 1965. Their over 6000 employees operate in 48 cities in 16 countries.

Toshiko Mori is a Japanese architect. She is the founder and the principal of Toshiko Mori Architect in New York City. Mori is a professor at Harvard University. Alas it is pointed out the first woman to receive tenure. I say alas as I would like for it not be an issue. In a future post her project in Senegal will be featured in an Architectural Digest article – 13 builidngs that redefined architected in the last 5 years.

Luis Barragán (1902-1988) was a Mexican architect and engineer. His sculptural buildings continue to inspire architects. “It seems important to me that spaces are not aggressive. I always used low forms and permanently worked with right angles. At all times in my work, I had in mind the horizontal and vertical planes and angles of intersection. This explains the frequent use of the cube in my architecture.” Luis Barragan. His personal home received a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2004. Read more about Barragán at Archdaily.

“We are honoring Luis Barragán for his commitment to architecture as a sublime act of the poetic imagination. He has created gardens, plazas, and fountains of haunting beauty—metaphysical landscapes for meditation and companionship. A stoical acceptance of solitude as man’s fate permeates Barragán’s work. His solitude is cosmic, with Mexico as the temporal abode he lovingly accepts. It is to the greater glory of this earthly house that he has created gardens where man can make peace with himself, and a chapel where his passions and desire may be forgiven and his faith proclaimed. The garden is the myth of the Beginning and the chapel that of the End. For Barragán, architecture is the form man gives to his life between both extremes.” – 1980 Jury Citation

James Sterling (1926-1992) was a British architect. From 1956 to 1963 he worked in partnership with James Gowan then from 1971 to 1972 he worked with Michael Wiford. His principal styles are brutalist and post-modern.

“We honor James Stirling—a prodigy for so many years—as a leader of the great transition from the Modern Movement to the architecture of the New—an architecture that once more has recognized historical roots, once more has close connections with the buildings surrounding it, once more can be called a new tradition. Originality within this tradition is Stirling’s distinction: in the old “modern times,” 45 degree angles in plan and section; today, startling juxtapositions and transpositions of clearly classical and nineteenth-century references. Hans Hollein (1934-2014) was an Austrian architect. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of California.
