Architecture – At the Movies

Today I thought we’d take a look at some movies which feature noteworthy architecture. Architectural Digest suggests 14 films to watch if you’re an architecture fan. To provide a glimpse of said architecture and give you a sense of the film I’ve included movie trailers. I’m surprised to find A Clockwork Orange in that list. Will I have to look at it again? Sigh! Breakfast at Tiffany’s – willing to watch that again. The Graduate – ha! A single Man. I was going to say Tom Ford’s one venture in the cinema but turns out there are more, must check that out. Enjoy!

Starchitect – Wolf D. Prix

Wolf D. Prix was born in 1942 in Vienna. He studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, the Architectural Association of London, as well as the Southern California Institute of Architecture. He is the co-founder of Coop Himmelb(l)au (meaning blue-sky cooperative in German). Coop Himmelb(l)au has been the recipient of many awards. Prix is one of the originators of the deconstructionist architecture movement.

Starchitect William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF)

William Pedersen founded Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) with Eugene Kohn & Sheldon Fox in 1976. They are are one of New York’s leading architectural firm. The company includes almost 30 other partners. Oddly enough the Starchitect page I have been using names William Pedersen as a starchitect. More research would either reveal why Pedersen made the list of starchitects or that the list does not take well into consideration partnerships. That being said KPF as one of New York’s leading architectural firms – we may need to explore more some of their iconic work.

Starchitect – João Luis Carrilho da Graça

João Luis Carrilho da Graça is a Portuguese architect. He was born in Portalegre, Portugal in 1952. He studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He founded Carrilho de Graça Arquitectos. Graça is the recipient of several prizes including Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France, the Prémio Pessoa, the Luzboa Award, the Order of Merit by the Portuguese Republic among several others.

Starchitect – Winy Maas – MVRDV

Wilhelmus (Winy) Mass is a Dutch architect. Born in Schijindel in 1959 he stuied at RHSTL Boskoop and the Delft University of Technology. Together with Jacab van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries he founded MVRDV in 1993. They have completed projects in the Netherlands, China, France, India, the United Kingdom, and the United states. Mass must be a force of nature for he is the only one listed on the Wikepedia Starchitect page.

Sou Fujimoto is a Japanese architect. Born in 1971 in Hokkaido, he attended the University of Tokyo. His structures are delicate and light. He is the recipient are several awards.

Architecture – Chateau Laurier – August 2020 Version

A new version for the addition to the Chateau Laurier has been released. This particular version was done in consultation with Heritage Ottawa.

I like that the height of the limestone structure is the same as the existing building. I also like the copper roof which has a certain silhouette which could me a modern version of a chateau roof. The two towers facing Major’s Hill Park do not block the view of the original building, which was a major objection with a previous version. Only two renditions have been released so it’s hard to really see how it will look.

Peter Coffman gives his take on it. His comments indicate that he is happier with this version than what had been approved by the city council but he is not 100% delighted. I love his statement: “The most successful additions to historic buildings I’ve seen start by understanding the old building and imagining what its present-day architectural descendants might look like.”

He refers to Tom`s Tower by Christopher Wren as well as the Bank of Canada addition by Arthur Erickson as very successful additions, respectfull of the original building and capable of withstanding the test of time. One of my favourite “of it’s time” additions is the addition to the former Bank of Montreal on Wellington Street by NORR Architects Engineers Planners.

From the moment the Chateau Laurier was sold much controversy has ensued. Now you must regret not having more seriously considered its purchase. Below, links to past posts on the subject.

Starchitect – Bernard Tschumi

Bernard Tschumi is a Swiss architect. Born in Lausanne Switzerland in 1944 he studied in Paris and at ETH in Zurich. He is based in New York City and in Paris. His work is said to be associated with deconstructivism. Deconstructivism, as described in archdaily is “Deconstructivism is, in fact, not a new architecture style, nor is it an avant-garde movement against architecture or society. It does not follow “rules” or acquire specific aesthetics, nor is it a rebellion against a social dilemma. It is the unleashing of infinite possibilities of playing around with forms and volumes.”
