João Luis Carrilho da Graça is a Portuguese architect. He was born in Portalegre, Portugal in 1952. He studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He founded Carrilho de Graça Arquitectos. Graça is the recipient of several prizes including Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France, the Prémio Pessoa, the Luzboa Award, the Order of Merit by the Portuguese Republic among several others.

Wilhelmus (Winy) Mass is a Dutch architect. Born in Schijindel in 1959 he stuied at RHSTL Boskoop and the Delft University of Technology. Together with Jacab van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries he founded MVRDV in 1993. They have completed projects in the Netherlands, China, France, India, the United Kingdom, and the United states. Mass must be a force of nature for he is the only one listed on the Wikepedia Starchitect page.

His work is said to be associated with deconstructivism. Deconstructivism, as described in archdaily is “Deconstructivism is, in fact, not a new architecture style, nor is it an avant-garde movement against architecture or society. It does not follow “rules” or acquire specific aesthetics, nor is it a rebellion against a social dilemma. It is the unleashing of infinite possibilities of playing around with forms and volumes.”

Stephen Holl is an American architect, born in 1947, in Bremerton, Washington. He studied at the University of Washington as well as the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. It is said that his style has shifted to a style of Phenomenology, which is a study of the structures of experience and consciousness. Perhaps a blog post subject of its own!

I found a new category of architects to explore. Starchitects. We’ve already done a few for instance Frank Gehry, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Richard Rogers, Alvaro Siza, and Bjarke Ingels (the first time I heard the word starchitect), later I`m comb through my list and see what other starchitect we`ve covered.

To qualify as a starchitect an architect has to have great fame within the architecture world and potentially one that overflows into the general public’s knowledge. Their work must have wow factor! Jeanne Gang is just one of those architects. Born in Belvidere, Illinois in 1954, Gang studied at the University of Illinois, the Swiss Federal University of Technical Studies, and l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Versailles. In 1997 she founded Studio Gang. Gang is one of the most recognized architects of her generation. Her work has earned her many awards.
