Architect – Peter Dickinson

Peter Allgood Rastall Dickinson was a Canadian architect (1925-1961). He attended the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Dickinson started his architecture career working with Page and Steele. In 1958 he founded Peter Dickinson Associates with 4 other architects. In 1960, the four original associates left and were replaced by Peter Webb, Boris Zerafa, Jack Korbee, Peter Tirion, René Menkès, and Rick Housden, subsequent to his passing they would later form WZMH Architects.

A friend was commenting on how he likes the Lester B. Pearson Building. The same friend who send us down the Jacobean Architecture rabbit hole that took us quite far including Elizabethan Architecture and Former Royal residences. But back to the Lester B. Pearson Building, he and his partner disagreed on the merits of said building. I’ll side with my friend here (as one should) and say I’ve always liked that building. Well of course I have; as I was looking at a pic of the building more attentively I thought, isn’t that a bit brutalist with its sculptural form? Well yes, it is considered modern with a brutalist influence. Modern and brutalist – what a great combination.

Former Royal Residences – Part 5

Today we explore the last post of Former royal residences. The previous posts can be found here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Perhaps something that could be explored would be the contrast of palace styles according to country. I’m watching Reign at the moment, and I’m surprised to find quite a difference with styles of palaces in France, England, and Scotland. I know it’s a tv series. I realize much of it is not accurate. But some of it is – I’ve fact-checked that! What I see is the palace in France is grey cut stone, even inside, the Palace in England is white and bright, and the palace in Scotland seems like darker stone.

Former Royal Residences – Part 4

Today we explore the second to last post of Former royal residences. We’ve already done Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

I’ve really gone down a royal rabbit hole (they open up before me quite regularly) as well as these posts I’ve been watching Reign. Prior to that I watched Bridgerton, prior to that I watched Belgravia.Bridgerton thought very popular comes with mixed reviews. I quite liked Belgravia. Next, I’m poised to watch other movies of Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I. I would love to put my hands on a series I watched too many years ago to count The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Then of course there’s Anne of the Thousand Days with Geneviève Bujold and Richard Burton. I ought to be a regular Tudor (oh there’s another series) specialist by the end of this. Well on that note…

Architecture – Royal Family Residences – Part 2

Last week when I posted Jacobean Architecture, which was part 2 of Renaissance Architecture, part 1 being Elizabethan Architecture, a friend commented on seeing Hatfield House. That made me think we could explore former royal residences. I thought it would be hard to find a list thereof, but turns out mine was not an original thought. The list is quite extensive, once we embard on that journey (virtual) we’ll be at it for some time. That being said the same site featured a list of current royal residences and although we’ve explored the Queen’s residences as well as royal family residences there were a few others. And so before exploring the former royal residences let’s complete the current residences.
