A greener post you will have never seen! Last night I started exploring the winners of the Architecture MasterPrize (AMP). Nghia, a Vietnamese architect, was the recipient of the Interior Design of the Year for his Nocenco Cafe in 2020. He studied at the Nagoya Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo. His designs are sustainable, make use of locally available materials, traditional, yet modern.

Ben van Berkel is a Dutch architect. He studied at Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Architectural Association in London. He is the principal at UNStudio. Van Berkel has lectured and taught in various universities. Learn more about van Berkel’s human-centric approach in this TED talk.

Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philipe Vassal are the Pritzker Architecture Prize laureates for 2021.

Lacaton and Vassal met at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecure in the 70s. Subsequently, Lacaton pursued her studies, and Vassal went to Niger. Lacaton would visit Niger regularly, and there, they did their first international project together, a staw hut.

Ma Yansong is a Chinese architect born in 1975 in Beijing. He studied at the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture as well as Yale University. In 2004 he founded MAD Architects.

Peter Allgood Rastall Dickinson was a Canadian architect (1925-1961). He attended the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Dickinson started his architecture career working with Page and Steele. In 1958 he founded Peter Dickinson Associates with 4 other architects. In 1960, the four original associates left and were replaced by Peter Webb, Boris Zerafa, Jack Korbee, Peter Tirion, René Menkès, and Rick Housden, subsequent to his passing they would later form WZMH Architects.

Today we explore the last post of Former royal residences. The previous posts can be found here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Perhaps something that could be explored would be the contrast of palace styles according to country. I’m watching Reign at the moment, and I’m surprised to find quite a difference with styles of palaces in France, England, and Scotland. I know it’s a tv series. I realize much of it is not accurate. But some of it is – I’ve fact-checked that! What I see is the palace in France is grey cut stone, even inside, the Palace in England is white and bright, and the palace in Scotland seems like darker stone.
