Chateau Laurier – Proposed expansion
When earlier this year they started expansion work on the National Art Centre, a building which I’ve always loved I was concerned, I remain that! But now proposed changes to the Chateau Laurier – I’m really concerned. At first I was seeing parts of the new construction on the front of the building, which to me is perfect, but it is just in the back on the park side. From Wellington Street there might be a bit of glass visible at the north end.
I generally love modern extensions to classic buildings, in this case I am worried, but it could work. It is generally not a recommended Heritage route to make extensions such as the on the Lord Elgin which come very very close to the original. Contrast and volume are key! And in this proposal we have contract and the roof line does not exceed the original structures.
