Vanier’s Crazy House
Well it seems today’s post was unavoidable. The demise of 158 Marier Avenue was coming at me from every direction. This is a funny house! I can’t count the number of times I’ve driven by it over the years. Often in shock! But traffic permitting I admit that I DID stop and stare, admire, gaze, partly in awe, partly in horror. But I do imagine that in a child’s eye, an eye who is not aware of bylaws, restraint, balance, and good taste as well as neighbourly relations (though Mr Robitaille had a great rapport) this would be, correction, this would have been quite an eye full.
Condolences to Gilles Robitaille who lost his wife a year ago and has had a difficult year. Vanier will not be the same! Thank goodness for Google Earth with which we can reflect upon the over the top excess of the past 9 years with 9 snapshots no less.
To whom shall the reins of kitsch be handed?
Vanity Fair Presents – Eminent Domains – NYC
An amusing little series of videos about famous condo or coop buildings in New York City, as well as their residents, and the architects who made it possible. It was released in 2013 but the stories remain fascinating.

Shower Design Ideas
I wonder what can be said about the evolution of showers in the last 30 years or so. From minuscule dark enclosures with a frosted glass to large open spaces. The bathtub has had to surrender it’s limelight! In some houses the bathtub of the 80s was perched on a raised platform large enough for 2 (well almost large enough) and usually dusty from lack of use.
Nice shower designs here! Showers really have come a long way in the last few years.
House Fires – Causes
Not a great subject but a timely one nevertheless. The dangers of house fires increase in winter and perhaps even more around the holidays, so do be cognizant of the causes and do be vigilent.
Car-licking Moose Warning
The warning is for Alberta, nevertheless, you may encounter a moose in this area, well hopefully not on Queen Street. That being said it’s good to know what to do if you see a moose who is drawn to your car.
Clear the Snow off your Car!
Remember to clear the snow off of your car before you drive away. Not just for 1 reason but for 3. You don’t to brake, the snow mount falls, and blinds you. And while driving on the Queensway you don’t want to be creating your own storm where everything else is clear. Plus it’s illegal!
Home Maintenance Tasks You Need to Tackle in December
I may have posted about some of these, but as winter is more upon us it bears repeating. Being well prepared for the snow, the cold, and the ice will help you enjoy my 4th favourite season.
As I read this however I do want to say hire a pro to go onto your roof. Don’t clear it yourself and don’t go up there to clean the chimney. Especially at this time of the year it’s slippery up there and if you’re not used to it – just don’t. My nephew-in-law did go on his roof a few years ago and came tumbling down and wore a brace for several months.
