Residents of Carlington are concerned about the impact of a 900 unit development at 1354 and 1376 Carling Avenue. Two 20-storey towers, one 22-storey tower, and two eight-storey buildings are being proposed. This delelopment is going up on the site of the former Talisman Motor in.

I feel protecting the built heritage of a neighbourhood is important; it is what gives that neighbourhood it’s spirit. Perhaps I don’t understand developer’s budgets and the city’s need but I do find it sad when heritage goes wrong. I think the intent proposed in 2009 and possible results of 2018 are quite different. They are being accepted not wholehartedly but in fear that additional negotiations could expose the building to further deterioration. Not good!

Architect – Massimiliano Fuksas

I found the name Massimiliano Fuksas googling “starchitect”. Turns out Wikipedia has quite a list of starchitects. Their description of a starchitect is:

“However, there is a difference between canonic status* and “starchitect”: as part of the “wow-factor” aspect of the term depends on current media visibility, it is used only to describe currently practising architects.”

* I believe canonic status should read canonical status New expression to me! Meanning “as having all the qualities that a thing of its kind should have.

Born in Rome in 1944, Fuksas received his degree in architecture at La Sapienza University in 1969. Since 1985 he has worked in partnership with his wife Doriana Mandrelli. The firm now possesses offices in Rome, Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt, and Shenzhen.

Fuksas has earned an Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects, an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and rounding out his international status the Grand Prix d’Architecture Française International Architecture Awards 2007

I Can’t find reference to the graffiti on the building. Is it meant to be or did someone vandalize? Graffiti is an art form I really scratch my head over. I can appreciete it’s forms its style but not a fan of vandalism and TO ME that is what it often is. Or where it finds its origins.

Libraries are great spaces! Great retreats! Ah but have the room… There’s a sense of permanence, almost an immediate feeling of reduced stress. But with the advent of ebooks and the internet are books as popular?

Online shopping has become so easy. Amazon and similar sites make browsing so easy. Google helps by providing a shopping tab as an option once you’ve entered a search. And so it is easier and easier to fill your home and your life with more and more. Not for nothing large storage facilities are sprouting out all over.

Clever Ways to Organize Small Apartments

Love the trianglar shelves in what seemed like an unusable corner. Some other good ideas here. Install pegboard on the kitchen wall and the next thing you know you’ll be cooking like Julia Child!

Typically not a fan of the one idea per webpage imposing a lot of clicking (built to showcase advertising) but I think the first idea is so clever I had to take a look at the whole list. Turns out beyond the main scroll method of large blocks Back and Next there is simple back and next text at the top of the page.

Carlingwood Shopping Centre

Another part of my childhood soon gone. I remember as a kid sitting in the back seat arriving at Carlingwood Shopping Centre. The Sears store window displays decorated for Christmas. Well that was then! Now Sears is gone and the Carlingwood Mall is proposing tearing down the old store. Sigh! The end of an era!
