Marcio Kogan is a Brazilian architect born in São Paulo in 1952. He is best known for private homes and retail design. Kogan studied at Mackenzie Presbyterian University School of Architecture and Urbanism. In 2001 his practice was renamed Studio MK27. Studio MK27 was selected to represent Brazil at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012. Kogan’s designs are known for detail, simplicity, and easy transition between inside and outside. The buildings have volumes and make use of raw materials. He is inspired by Brazilian modern architecture.

Stuart Cohen is a Chicago architect. He was a member of the Chicago Seven. Members of that group that we have previously explored include: Stanley Tigerman, Larry Booth and Thomas Beeby. Prior to opening his own practice with his wife, Stuart Cohen & Julie Hacker Architects, Cohen worked with Richard Meier and Associates , Phillip Johnson, and John Burgee. He is the recipient of many awards. He was selected by Town and Country Magazine as one of the top fifty residential architects in the country and was included in the Architectural Digest’s AD100. Cohen was a faculty member at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has lectured at Harvard, Columbia, Penn, and Notre Dame.

Julie Hacker holds a Bachelor’s of Arts from Wesleyan University. She obtained a Master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1985. She has worked for Booth Hansen and Hammond Beeby and Babka (now HBRA). She was made partner in 1991.

Oddly enough it was quite difficult to find examples of their work in spite of their accomplishments. Below is a sample of their work.

Diébédo Francis Kéré is a Burkinabé architect. Born in Gando, Burkino Faso in 1965 he was the first child in Gando to be sent to school. Subsequently, he studied at the Technical University of Berlin where he now lives. In 1985 he started Kéré Architecture. Wanting to help the children in his village he orchestrated the setting up of its first school. He is the latest laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. So there was version 1, then version 2, version 3 and now version 4. Molly likes version 4. Must listen to that as she has a good eye for conversations established between buldings and art. David Jeans of Heritage Ottawa says some concerns previously raised have been addressed but also states version 4 looks seems like a variation of versions 1, 2, and 3. Well then as variations go I’m going with version 3, for now, as I like the contrast of glass and limestone. Sort of like the Bank of Canada expansion.

Other posts on the subject were a review of version 2, my post on the architects involved and another post on additions to buildings. I’m totally with the Ontario Heritage Act which states that an extension should be of its time. Of its time but complementing, contrasting, dialoguing with the original structure. With that philosiphy in mind I dont think we should be echoing an expansion such as on the Lord Elgin. Though successufuly executed I dont think we should do that. That approach does not add anything of interest, just expands with more room.
