Canadians concerned about their Mortgage Renewing
More than 3 million Canadians have a mortgage renewing in the next 18 months, and most of them are worried about it. Royal LePage has recently issued a press release. These are the highlights:
- 16% of current mortgagees will be renewing their lending agreements within the next 12 months, while another 15% will be renewing in 12 to 18 months
- Almost three-quarters (74%) of Canadian mortgage holders currently have a fixed-rate mortgage; 20% have a variable-rate mortgage
- 40% of variable-rate or hybrid mortgage holders concerned about their upcoming renewal say they plan to switch to a fixed rate
- 64% of variable-rate or hybrid mortgage holders say that higher interest rates have caused their mortgage payment to hit its trigger rate and thus increased their monthly cost
- 76% of variable-rate or hybrid mortgage holders say that higher interest rates have caused financial strain on their household, causing them to reduce spending and dip into savings

Delays in Housing Construction in Canada
The Canadian Real Estate Wealth blog of the The Canadian Real Estate Magazine reports that in our approval process for new homes Canada ranks 34 out of 35 within the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It takes 250 days to get a permit – 3 times longer than in the US.
Having seen how the official plan and the secondary plans are drafted. My experience has been to see the secondary plans drafted then every time a proposed construction is received an exception to the plan is reviewed. Seems the plans rarely anticipate what will really be proposed. Then of course consultation at many levels ensues and creates delays. Could it not be that the plan be more in keeping with what will likely be proposed.

Architecture – War of the Operas
Academy of Music
East 14th Street and Irving Place, Manhattan
1854 – 1926
The Metropolitan Opera House – also known as the Old Metropolitan Opera House
1411 Broadway
1883 – 1967
J. Cleveland Cady
I chose to explore this topic as it will be featured in season 2 of The Gilded Age, wich will be released on Sunday, October 29.
Between 1906 and 1910 New York City was the setting of the War of the Operas.
At first the Academy of Music was the setting for Operas. It was considered the epitomy of high culture and refinement. Initially 4000 seats on 5 levels a fire in 1866 necessitated rebuilding and reduced the number of seats to 2500. New York high society had their boxes. These were owned by the old money. New money was not able to obtain boxes. New money at the time being John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and William Kissam Vanderbilt.
The battle started when the new money had the Metropolitan Opera house built. Twice the size of the Academy it was of course very opulent. Boxes were purchased at the time for $15,000 ($46,000 in today’s money).
Eventually Caroline Aster who was the ultimate New York socialite conceded and relocated to the Metropolitan Opera House. With her acceptance of the new operat house the rest of the old money followed.
50 things retirees should throw out
I was going to say who writes these things? Then I saw the link autoreviewhub.com. It’s an interesting list; if nothing else it will start you thinking. Their list includes: cars, linen, small kitchen appliances, shoes, sentimental items.
Yesterday, 2 years after moving into my condo, I sorted out the top shelves in my bedroom closet. Some things had been put there immediately after the move, unclear if I would use or not. Well 2 years later safe to say some is not.
Apparently this is a favourite topic of mine. And so here are the links to posts I’ve shared over the course of several years:
