Architecture – Royal Family Residences
I admit it, watching the Royal Wedding subsequently had me wondering: Where will the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex live? One thing led to the other and I started to wonder where do the others live? We know where the Queen lives, that’s been the subject of a previous post but what of the others.
Anmer Hall
This late-Georgian style house in Norfolf, is in the style of a Georgian country house. It was a wedding gift to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Catherine) from the Queen. It was built in the 18th century and forms part of the Sandringham estate.
Bagshot Park
Is currently the home of the Earl and Countess of Wessex (Edward & Sophie). It’s style is reflective of the Indian taste. The grounds are registered with the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The original lodge was built in 1631.
Clarence House
Clarence house was designed by John Nash. It was built between 1825 and 1827. From 1953 to 2002 it was the home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Now it is the home of the Charles, Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Alas there is little that remains of the original structure.
Gatcombe Park
Gatcombe Park is the country of estate of Anne, Princess Royal. It was built in the 18th century according to George Basevi’s design.
Kensington Palace
Kensington Palace has been a royal residence since the 17th century. Originally a Jacobean style mansion. It is Queen Victoria’s birthplace. It was the home of Princess Margaret in the 60s and 70s and of Diana, Princess of Wales in the 80s. It is now home to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry & Meghan), The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William & Catherine) as well other royals. The State Rooms are open to the public.
As you can see from this photo. Kensington Palace is Duke & Duchess rich. It’s a regular village! Note that this illustration is not quite correct as Harry & Meghan will not be living in Nottingham Cottage.
Nottingham Cottage
Nottingham Cottage was designed by Christopher Wren. The house has been occupied by various members of the Royal Family over the years, including, until recently, Prince Harry.
Royal Lodge Windsor
Dating back to the mid-seventeenth century. It’s contemporary style is that of cottage orné. It is currently leased to Prince Andrew, Duke of York. The Duchess of York (Sarah) also lives there.
St James’s Palace
Principally built between 1531 and 1536 it is the oldest royal palace. The red brick structure is primarily of Tudor style. Today it is the home of Prince Anne, The Princess Royal.
