Architecture/Design – Pedro Friedeberg
Today let’s explore the work of a man who studied architecture, then veered into another direction to become a celebrated designer, artist, and surrealist: Pedro Friedeberg. Friedeberg was born in Italy in 1936 of German parents. He now lives in Mexico City. A few days ago I stumbled into pics of his home in Mexico City. His home, redefines the maximalist look and makes me look like a minimalist (not an easy feat).
Obsessed as I am with chairs, as evidenced in my Pinterest chair board I must admit I never paid too much attention to his famous hand-chair. A mistake which is now being corrected. I wish I had enough room to place one somewhere! After writing this post I’ll explore my living room and dining room and see where oh where…
Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan’s West Village home makes use of the gilded version of the hand at the head of their dining room table. Their flat has a surrealist feel which I’m sure would make Friedeberg happy. Can I say surrealist but toned down – well see for yourself. Adler is a fabulous potter, desinger and author. Doonan is the Ambassador-at-Large for Barneys the clothing store.
This is somehow reminding of an earlier post featuring Tommy Hilfiger’s Miami home. Given a choise (I know, I know it’s not been offered) I’d be in Adler and Doonan’s home. Not a great fan of Hilfiger’s boldly patterned home. But of course today after exploring Friedeberg, Adler, and Doonan’s homes this seems more toned down than it did a few days ago. Thoughts? Comments?
Other pieces by Friedeberg include:
Chair for an Inca Princess
Desk
Pink Butterfly Chair
Please Help Me
Tiger Table
Should any of these pieces strike your fancy you can shop for them on 1stdibs. Just remember this is not just furniture it is art and so the prices are not for the faint of heart.
I took to this coffee table. Only to discover it was $39,000. I think it will have to wait a moment or two. For now I will continue to use my antique suitcases.
Putting an end to our design exploration for today I leave you on a distinct, but similar look; Christian Lacroix’s apartment in Paris. I hope you’ve enjoyed our surealist exploration!
