Architect – Paul Williams
Paul Williams (1894-1980) was born in Los Angeles, California. He studied architecture at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design as well as the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. In 1922 he founded his own office. Interesting, and sad, he learned to draw upside down in order to draw with his client sitting across from him. Back in 1920 his clients would not have wanted to sit next to a black man. He was the first African-American member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). We won many awards. He received honourary doctorates from the Lincoln University of Missouri, the Howard University, and the Tuskegee Institute.
