Architect – Oscar Niemeyer
Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, the king of the curve, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907. His work on reinforced concrete is considered very important as is his influence on modern architecture. He has stated being influenced by Le Corbusier but not limited by him. The 1940s and 1950s were his most prolific years. The National Congress of Brazil, the Cathedral of Brasilia, the Palacio da Alvorada, the Palacio do Planato, and the Supreme Federal Court were designed at the request of Juscelino Kubitschek then President for the new capital. Due to political unrest Niemeyer left Brazil in the mid 60s. Upon his return in 1988 he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Price. In 2012 he died at 104, with approximately 600 projects to his credit.
