Subsequent to a fire in 1848 at the Palace of Westminster, Augustus Pugin a well-known architect of the Neo-gothic style was selected by then Prime Minister Sir Rober Peel. Peel did not like the Neo-classic style popular at the time with John Nash and William Wilkins. Pugin had to submit his proposals through a colleague he was working with Charles Barry as the former had just converted to Roman Catholic and thus rendered himself unacceptable. Consequently Pugin’s involvement with the design was credited more heavily than it should have to Charles Barry. A belief that was posthumously corrected by Pugin’s son Edward. Ultimately the clock tower was Pugin’s last design.
