Architecture – Cathedrals – Italy
As I write this post I realize that next week’s post will need to address the different styles featured here. For now, may I suggest you appreciate the building, dream of visiting it’s city and next week we’ll delve into the distinction of the styles.
Amalfi – Duomo di Sant’Andrea
Amalfi is an overlay of Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and finaly Norman-Arab-Byzantine. Started in the 9th century it was refaced in the 19th.
Assisi – Saint-Francis Basilica
Started in 1228, the interior is decorated with Fresco’s by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti and possible Pietro Cavallini.
Florence – Duoma Cathedral of Florence
This cathedral was begun in 1296 and is in the Gothic style. The Gothic Revival facade is made of green, pink and white marble. The dome is by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Naples – Chiesa di Napoli
Completed in the 14th century. It is considered to be Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-gothic is style.
Orvieto – Orvieto Cathedral
Started in the 14th century It’s facade is considered a classic piece of religious construction. It is of the Romanesque Style.
Palermo – Cattedrale di Palermo
Erected in 1185 it has had many additions and modifications thus it’s style is Norman, Moorish, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical.
Parma – Piazza Duomo Parma
Construction on this Romanesque cathedral was started in 1059.
Pisa – Piazza del Duomo in Pisa
Started in 1063. Also of various styles including classical, Lombard-Emilian, Byzantine, and Islamic.
Rome – Basilica Papale San Pietro
Built in the Renaisance and Baroque styles construction started in 1506.
San Lorenzo – Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Consecrated in 1118, this cathedral is in the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Siena – Duomo di Siena “La Cattedrale”
Completed partly in 1215 and 1263. The style is Italian Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical.
Trento – Trento Cathedral
Commissioned in the 13th century in the Gothic style.
Venice – Basilica di San Marco
Completed in 832. This famous cathedral is built in Italo-Byzantine style.
